I think this brand of fun might be way too fancy for me but I could always just try to enjoy it while it lasts. Nothing wrong with making new friends, right?
Yeah, he has an accent. Mostly British but maybe something else, too? Uh? Late twenties, maybe early thirties. Far as I can tell.
Think of it as trying a new experience. Working some fancy in your life is never a bad thing.
Okay, so you know how we get all kinds of fictional characters around here who aren't so fictional? He might be one of them. I mean, I don't know super specifics but I know some things. If you wanna know, maybe we should meet up and I can give you the 411 on what I know.
Considering I'm close friends with one Mr. James Potter, yeah, I'd say I know how that goes.
You're kidding me. He's not like some smarmy romance novel character is he? That seems like it could be a distinct possibility. But like the really upscale romance novels, not Harlequin.
It's this tv series I would watch sometimes. Involved teenagers and vampires and werewolves and witches. Kinda interesting, but the name Eiljah Mikaelson...that was one of the names of the really old vampires.
[She doesn't like when monsters deviate from the versions she knows. It makes dealing with them a hell of a lot harder.]
Even if it's just a maybe, I need to know everything you do. If there's a vampire suddenly on my tail, then I'd like to be informed. Diner, ten minutes?
[Jo, in fact, is there in five minutes rather than ten, and claims a booth for them near the back where there's less of a chance of them being heard. When Charlie arrives, there are already two cups of coffee waiting on the table, with Charlie's preferred amount of cream and sugar set out next to her mug.]
[ Charlie is there soon after, with a notebook in hand. She's tried to jot down what she remembers, but it's been so long since she's even watched the show. It's not like she got super obsessed and scoured the wiki for details, either.
Plopping down in the seat across from Jo, she sets her notebook down in front of her. ]
Fair warning - I don't have a whole lot to go on. It was usually background noise when I did other things...coffee! [ Look at that, she's distracted with dumping the cream and sugar in the drink before looking back up at Jo. ] Sorry, sorry. Okay, so Elijah. Dark hair, right? I remember he seemed very elegant and stuff.
[She can't believe they're even having this conversation, but Charlie had been right. Stranger things had happened in Wonderland. Much stranger things. Jo's coming back from the dead was probably counted among them.
She smirks, putting cream into her own coffee.]
Thought you might appreciate it. Anyway, yeah, dark hair. Sure it would be easier if I had a picture available, but that would have been-- you know, awkward.
Yeah, people don't usually go all 'let's take a selfie' on the first date. The second one, maybe. [ She grins before taking a sip of her coffee, pulling the notebook closer to her. ]
I tried to jot down what I could remember. [ It's not very organized. The word OLD is underlined three times and the fourth item down. ] He's from the first group of vampires created in this...that world. We're talking super old, I think the age was over a thousand? Might need to fact check that...uh. Well, maybe not.
[ Since it would involved asking the source. ]
His whole family is a little bit crazy. Like, psycho crazy. Guess that's what happens when you're walking around on the planet for centuries, I mean, who would be sane after that long? [ Immortality is no bueno, Jo. Charlie wouldn't want it. Probably. ]
[Jo leans forward against the table, closing her eyes for a moment as she presses her fingers to her temples. Wait a minute there, Charlie. Let's back up a few steps.]
So when Dean was flipping out and throwing around the word 'monster'...
[She exhales slowly before looking up.]
He wasn't kidding. And here I thought he was being overdramatic. He kind of has a track record when it comes to guys I date, considering he tried to murder the last one.
[Let's not even get into whether or not Tom potentially deserved that. She likes to think not.]
When you say psycho crazy -- are talking genocide, or just fun at parties? Not that it matters, I mean-- a vampire is a vampire.
[Not a good thing to be -- but he'd been nice. That makes this feel like a personal affront.]
Dean's got some awesome instincts, I've gotta give him props there.
[ Charlie's not really sure what to think, honestly. If it really is who she thinks he is, then she remembers he was probably the least troublesome out of anyone in his family. Still scary, though. ]
Well, genocide was probably on the table at one point. His brother takes murderous rampage to a whole new extreme. Don't know the deets, but suffice it to say he is one scary dude. [ She looks back down at her notebook, squinting a bit. ] I wouldn't say all vampires are bad, though. I mean, look at Angel. I only talked to the guy a couple of times, but I remember him from home and he wasn't so bad.
[ So, see Jo? NOT ALL VAMPIRES. Charlie taps an item on her list, mulling it over. ]
The pretty much look just like they're human - heartbeat and everything. It's kinda hard to tell when one is a vampire or something unless they show you the whole vamp face thing. [ And here, she'll hold up her hands to her mouth, curving her fingers into a mockery of fangs. ]
[She'll give him that. She does look up to Dean, as a hunter and in general, and there's damn good reason for that. He's good at what he does. He knows his shit.]
They sound like real charmers. [She pauses, just a beat.] I don't know Angel that well, but I do know he helps the resistance -- and he helped Cas when I-- needed a hand with something.
[When her boyfriend feigned going into hiding with her and then tried to strangle her to death, she means.]
Vamp face? More than just teeth? [She's used to seeing some pretty crazy choppers on vamps, but that's usually where it ends.] At least that part's not new -- the whole stealth angle. Usually can't tell until it's too late.
It's the teeth and they get these creepy dark veins under their eyes. Can't even explain it - their eyes change color, too! [ Vampire lore needs to get its crap together and have things be uniform all over the board, for crying out loud. ]
I know most of their vampires can be staked in the heart like normal. Elijah's one of those special ones, so I - [ And she pauses, looking down at her notes and sighing. ] Can't actually remember how his kind can be killed. Worst info gatherer is me.
[She squints a little at the mental image that conjures. Unsettling, though no more than the mouth-full-of-knives the vampires she's used to generally sport.]
Well, it's not like this is the kind of stuff you thought you'd have to commit to memory, hunter-in-training or otherwise. These kinds of vampires-- they just don't exist where we're from.
[She's been in Wonderland long enough now that saying that doesn't feel as weird as it could.]
If we can find out, we should -- running up to stake someone isn't exactly a solution in this place, considering how it defies the laws of nature, but I'll feel a hell of a lot better knowing that everyone who needs to is able to defend themselves instead of getting painted into a corner because Wonderland is now home to some kind of super-vamp.
A most excellent point! I'm surprised I even remember this much, no lie. I was half paying attention to it while I did other things.
[ Like code. Having background noise does wonders for that sort of task. ]
Plus, the whole coming back from the dead thing. Don't think any vampires would come back full of sunshine and happiness, right? Don't get me wrong, the coming back to life thing is way awesome, and probably a lot of the reason people don't go full on crazy here.
[ And here she stops, because someone did. Someone close to Jo, someone who had killed her. There's an uncomfortable moment where she squirms in her seat and then finishes her coffee.]
[It hits her exactly the way Charlie doesn't mean for it to, and she shifts uncomfortably as she quickly looks down into her own cup of coffee for a moment before clearing her throat. There's only so much she can say about that situation; most people aren't sympathetic. Those who are close to her are, to some degree, but that doesn't change what was done.
Tom killed Charlie, which means Jo can't talk to her about it. Not ever, if she can help it.]
Yeah--
[She forces a smile before drinking some of her own coffee to help center herself.]
The last thing any of us wants is to piss someone like that off by killing him, only to have him come back a few days later. Not great for our long-term survival or mental health. Not that I'm-- I mean. I don't know what I should do with this information, anyway.
[ Way to go, Bradbury. Making things awkward for literally no reason. She picks up her pen, doodling in the margins of her notebook as she listens to Jo. ]
Being informed is the first step to preparing your defense. [ It sounds like she's quoting someone here, but really she just made it up on the fly. ] You could just avoid him like the plague, or I dunno. Confront him about it? I don't think he would actually do anything to you. He seems pretty legit when it comes to the not killing people at the drop of a hat.
[ Now, anyway. Who knows what he was like centuries ago, but she's not even gonna say that out loud. ]
[All is forgiven, Charlie. There's a handful of people that Jo finds it difficult to be angry with or hold a grudge against, and Charlie is one of them -- she hadn't meant it, and Jo's not about to split hairs with her over it. Better to move on, as difficult as that may be -- it's been a months-long struggle, every step helps.]
You can bet I'm planning on avoiding him, but--
[Even if he might not do anything, how can she be sure?]
It's not me I'm worried about, it's everyone else. I mean, how many vampires have we had come through this place? Tons, and not all of them were like Angel or Benny. Some were nasty, even if they hid it well.
[She exhales.]
I'm gonna tell him I know. He should know someone's watching him.
I feel like that might change someday soon. Not because of this, necessarily, but--
[She grimaces and gives a dismissive wave with one hand.]
You know how trigger-happy some people can be. [Nevermind the fact that she's planning on banging on Elijah's door with a knife in hand to get all incredulous at him. That's beside the point.] Things might not always be this peaceful, though it's nice to think it'd stay this way.
[Beat.]
I think I'll handle this one on my own. But if anything takes a hard left turn, I'll give you a call. Promise. [She smiles, wryly.] I shouldn't keep you, though. Thanks for meeting me, I feel-- well-informed?
I am here for any and all deet dropping coffee dates.
[ Charlie's glad she's not in Jo's position, honestly. Jo is brave in ways Charlie wishes she could be sometimes, though in a pinch Charlie can even surprise herself sometimes.
Before getting up to leave, she gathers her notebook and watches Jo for a moment before speaking up. ]

It's probably just a coincidence, right? I mean, the name's not exactly common, but it can't be that rare.
He has a heartbeat.

Not an expert in their version of vamps, but they seem to be pretty human-y except for the whole drinking blood thing.
I think they even eat food, I remember thinking that was weirdsauce.
